Giants need to add offense to go with stellar pitching
When it comes to winning games, Bruce Bochy does more with less. He wouldn’t mind a little more relaxation. With the dominant pitching staff built around Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Brian Wilson and a lineup that is so weak you wonder why Barry Bonds hasn’t come out of retirement, every game’s a nail-biter at AT&T Park, baseball’s most beautiful ballpark.
Tiger Woods set for PGA Tour debut
PEBBLE BEACH – Tiger Woods, wearing a windbreaker and answering questions humorously and seriously, spoke nearly 1,540 words of insight about his own game and that of his amateur playing partner this week at the AT&T National Pro-Am, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
Former Sharks captain Nolan retires

Lincoln reminds us of American inventiveness
Abraham Lincoln never visited Silicon Valley, but he would no doubt appreciate the spirit of innovation and ingenuity that exists in our global high-tech epicenter. Lincoln, whose birth date is Sunday, happens to be the only U.S. president who ever received an invention patent. That fact leads me to believe he would have a word or two to say to many of today's politicians who are now thwarting efforts to upgrade America's patenting system .
Valentine’s Day was so much easier when we were kids
I have good news and bad news for Valentine's Day. The good news is, it only happens once a year. The bad news is, unless you are a kindergartner, your easy Valentine's Days are way, way behind you. Yeah, I'm thinking that makes us circle right back to the good news, right?
Aramati and Arcis
Hi, my name is Aramati (86207) and this is my buddy Arcis (86208). When I go exploring, Arcis isn't far behind because we love each other and pretty much everyone we meet. For Valentine's Day, I would like to go home with a family that will let me hop on their laps while Arcis cuddles and gives kisses. If nuzzling is your thing, come and meet us at HSSV's Animal Community Center! Visit the Humane Society Silicon Valley, 901 Ames Ave., Milpitas, or call (408) 262-2133.
Baby season has arrived
A Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center volunteer just picked up the first baby birds of the season. The tiny-tiny hummingbirds (two of which will fit on a dime) are just one day old and came in with egg shell still stuck to their backs. Their mother had flown into a home improvement store, become trapped, and could not return to care for them in their nest in the store's garden center. The extremely fragile babies now require regular feedings of a special formula every 15 minutes for several weeks before they can eat on their own, fly and then be released---IF they survive the first couple of days of their lives.
Sportsmanship, Super Bowl and local prep playoffs
Wanted to quickly address the near-brawl during last Friday night's basketball game between Christopher High and North Monterey County. As I reported before, the benches cleared after a hard foul was committed on Christopher's DJ Campos midway through the second quarter of a Cougars 67-25 win. (Read the story) Players from both teams began pushing and shoving one another and the situation was about to be sorted out when the benches emptied – an obvious no-no – and fans went wild, hooting and hollering. Luckily no punches were thrown - at least I didn't see any - and the game continued fight-free the rest of the way.

LOS ANGELES – There are 366 days from this year's Super Bowl to the next, and there is a lot of work to do. Thank heavens it's leap year.
