Satisfy your artistic cravings

One of the wonderful opportunities in our community is the chance to enjoy art at no cost. Exhibits are on display at the Gilroy Center for the Arts on Monterey at Seventh Street every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon and Saturday. This month's feature is a quilt show by local fiber artists. Don't miss this opportunity to view unique, meticulous and creative stitchery. If you're looking for a reasonably priced one-of-a-kind handmade gift or something for your home, visit the Center's Artisans' Gift Gallery.

Football and wine go hand in hand

Whether you're rooting for the Patriots or the Giants, or just tuning in to watch the multi-million dollar commercials, you'll no doubt be thinking about which wines to serve with your salty, spicy, cheesy Super Bowl snacks.

San Jose sharp coming out of break, tops Jackets

SAN JOSE – Scoring at least six goals for the third time in 48 games, San Jose powered past the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-0 Tuesday night at sold-out HP Pavilion. The Sharks host the Dallas Stars Thursday before visiting the Phoenix Coyotes Saturday night. San Jose solidified its hold on...

Bowl ads with dogs both hit and miss

Ah, Super Bowl weekend. Let the parties begin! More importantly, let those television commercials begin! Last year, a pug with a passion for Doritos made the top 10 list for commercial success, along with a group of dogs throwing a party and serving Bud Light. This year, we'll have rottweilers and Doritos, and a chorus of dogs with Volkswagens. All designed to make us laugh while we go out and buy their brand.

It’s a Super Bowl world after all

It's the most wonderful time of the year. No, no, not Christmas, silly! Super Bowl Sunday is coming for crying out loud.

FOOTBALL: Dawn of ‘new day’ for Raiders with Allen’s arrival

ALAMEDA – If all goes according to plan, the Raiders won't be holding another news conference to announce the hiring of a head coach for at least a few years.

BOXING: Bob Arum says Mayweather-Pacquiao won’t happen in the spring

LOS ANGELES – Manny Pacquiao won't fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. until November at the earliest, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said Monday. Arum said Mayweather is trying to stage his next fight May 5 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas without promising Pacquiao a 50-50 split of fight revenue. As a result, Mayweather "isn't in the picture" as Arum plans Pacquiao's next fight for June 9.

GETTING OUT: Experiencing Pinnacles’ best-kept secret

Pinnacles National Monument, nestled in the Gabilan Mountains an hour south of Hollister, boasts a fistful of marquis attractions. I recently joined a group of friends to hike to a feature that many people don’t even know is part of the park.

Obama a no-show in the California housing crisis

Pinpointing the prime cause of California's slow recovery from recession is easy: Too little has been done about the crisis in housing construction, values and foreclosures.

NHL: Team Chara outlasts Team Alfredsson in all-star game

OTTAWA – Defense was a rumor. So was physical play. Heck, the singer Drake, who performed after the second intermission, did as much hitting as the players in Sunday's 59th NHL All-Star Game at Scotiabank Place. In other words, it was a typical All-Star Game: Free-wheeling pond hockey on national TV. The New York Rangers' Marian Gaborik recorded a hat trick and was named the MVP as Team Chara outlasted Team Alfredsson, 12-9. It was the fourth-highest scoring game in all-star history.
