The United States is not a Christian nation

Recently, Mr. Erwin Boggs wrote a letter to this newspaper detailing the "attack" on "Christians, country, and Christmas." I am here to denounce and rebut the claims Mr. Boggs made.

Entitlement mentality: Not just a fiscal threat

Christmastime is a season of gratitude. Whether it's because we reflect upon the birth of the Christ child or the blessings of the past year, the holiday often prompts a sense of appreciation and thankfulness, as well as the tradition of gift-giving.

A holiday miracle

A local woman recently witnessed a horrible incidence in Gilroy. A vehicle in front of her had accidentally collided with an owl that was flying low to capture a rodent.

Jackson, Warriors fall in season opener to Clippers, 105-86

Christmas for Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson turned sour pretty suddenly Sunday night, ending with a 105-86 season-opening loss to the visiting Los Angeles Clippers. David Lee led the Warriors with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Still, Jackson's debut as an NBA head coach, before a sellout crowd at Oracle Arena and a national TV audience, was tainted by a fourth-quarter collapse that suggested Warriors basketball hasn't changed much.

Sharks win in shootout for fourth consecutive victory

SAN JOSE – A fourth consecutive victory was the result Friday night when Ryane Clowe’s goal in the fourth round of the shootout lifted the San Jose Sharks past the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 at sold-out HP Pavilion. After the first three rounds of the shootout went by without a...

Christmas ushers in a new chapter – hey ‘Papa’

I am grateful. I have a lot to draw on trying to navigate my future as, "Papa." My Italian and Irish grandparents were close at hand - I could ride my bike to both homes while I was a young whippersnapper - and did so often. I could even get to my grandfather Derry's business, just to say hello or, as I got older, lend a hand around Derry's Feed and Fuel, which smelled like a mixture of alfalfa, hay and rabbit pellets. More importantly, in the geography of the heart, my grandparents drew the map.

A few thoughts on what to do with city’s surplus cash

So Gilroy has a great reserve of money, where most cities are panicking about their deficits. Well done, Gilroy! Let's keep some of that money on reserve in the thought that harder times may be coming ... but I have some ideas of how we could spend a small portion of it and maybe make things better.

Red Phone: Grass needed at dog park

“Will there be any improvements regarding the doggie park in Gilroy? The last time I was there with my little dog, it was just me the dog and three men sitting on the grass near the entrance to the doggie area, each had their own brown bag they were drinking from. I decided to go the doggie park in Morgan Hill. The people that I did talk to at the Morgan Hill park lived in Gilroy. What does that say for our little town? I can't walk my dog in my neighborhood, because I live in a mobile home park, that does not allow dogs to be walked, even with a leash in one hand and a pick up poop bag in the other. It sure would be nice to see some grass, trees and water for the little dogs. Benches would be nice so people could sit and just watch the little dogs playing. Thanks for listening.”
