‘Muslim Next Door’ to speak at MH library

Even though Morgan Hill Access TV (MHAT) is an electronic medium that uses video and audio to present information and ideas to the public on cable channel 19 in Morgan Hill, the volunteers at the station also wish to promote the joy of reading books. Through a partnership with the Morgan Hill Public Library, in 2012 we will participate in the Silicon Valley Reads program.

‘Grinch’ and ‘Cats’ fill holiday season with joy

The Grinch is back in all his creepy, tiny heart glory with his dog, Max, who narrates this rollicking story with music. This is a colorful, exuberant, vibrant, gaudy and - most of all - fun musical, with a bouquet of upbeat, listenable songs. "The Grinch" successfully made it to Broadway in 2006 and, fortunately, touring companies have lit up theaters ever since.

It’s about time for a little Champagne

"Come quickly, I'm drinking stars!" exclaimed Dom Perignon when he first discovered the bubbles in his wine some 300 years ago. And ever since, Champagne (or sparkling wine as it is called outside of the Champagne region of France) has been a staple of New Year's Eve parties and celebrations everywhere.

Merry quiz-mas

1. The song "Jingle Bells" was actually written to promote:

Finding that perfect Christmas gift under your tree

You know, there are truly all kinds of Christmas presents. Sometimes the perfect gift is the kind you don't even have to wrap, which, I hope, is the kind waiting under your tree.

White teeth aren’t necessarily healthy

Q: We've taken Eli, our poodle, to the same groomer for the past seven years. He loves going there and looks fabulous when they are done. They also clean his teeth and he has a beautiful smile when they finish. But our vet tells us that the groomer's dental work is not good enough and his teeth should be cleaned at the clinic. This means anesthesia and an expensive vet bill. The vet insists the groomer can't do the job, even though Eli looks so good afterwards. My husband thinks the vet is trying to drum up more business. She's a good veterinarian, and I usually trust her judgement. What's the story here?

Gems from ‘The Ultimate Gift’

As we approach another holiday season, I thought it would be appropriate to share some thoughts from a favorite gift book of mine, "The Ultimate Gift", by Jim Stovall. The book is told in an easy to read story fashion and filled with little gems of wisdom.

Niners top Steelers with prime-time performance, 20-3

Ben Roethlisberger again played on a badly sprained ankle. This time, the veteran quarterback couldn't produce the kind of heroics that had burnished his reputation as a gamer a little more than a week ago. As a result, the Steelers still need help if they are to win a fourth AFC North title in five seasons under coach Mike Tomlin and avoid taking the wild-card route in the playoffs. San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith outdueled Roethlisberger, and the 49ers' defense was anything but in the Christmas spirit as San Francisco beat the Steelers, 20-3, in a twice-delayed game at Candlestick Park.

OFF THE TOP: Niners’ victory on Monday night a blast from the past

Great to watch the San Francisco 49ers get their best win of the season in prime time on Monday Night Football. The 20-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, in my mind, was the most impressive all-around performance thus far this year – and a perfect remedy for last week’s ugly loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

GETTING OUT: Four hikes for the holiday season

The holidays are at hand. The joy and festivities of the season reach a fever pitch as family and friends begin to arrive for their annual visit. If you recall, it was about day two or three of their visits last year before the walls of your house appeared to be closing in. Remember? At the same time, you felt a slight rush of anxiety and an unusually rapid heart rate.
