Lessons of Civil War still speak to all of us
On April 9, 1865, the American Civil War came to a virtual end with the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia by General Robert E. Lee to Union General Ulysses S. Grant’s Army of the Potomac in the quaint little town of Appomattox Court House in central Virginia. This pivotal capitulation, soon followed by other confederate submissions, brought to an end the most bloody, divisive, and potentially history changing time in our country’s history.
What gives with the Monterey Street traffic light?
I travel northbound on Monterey Street five days a week while on my way to work in the morning and this signal light changes even though no vehicles approaching intersection from 3rd street. Usually takes approx. 30-45 seconds to cycle, but with no oncoming traffic in either direction.
What’s going on with the GPAC, is public being heard?
Everybody makes mistakes. The General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) made a whopper, completely ignoring the very public input that they asked for. We should be shocked, offended and outraged.
NHL: Sharks pound Avalanche
SAN JOSE–San Jose celebrated a return from a 3-3-1 roadtrip by turning back the Colorado Avalanche 5-1 at a sold-out SAP Center Wednesday night.
Fed up with street racing; Eigleberry St. project update
I sit here finally fed up with the street racing, which goes on here on a somewhat regular basis. It begins promptly at 9:30 p.m. and lasts approximately 15 minutes each night and some nights residents who live up here are treated to late night racing on the roundabout somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 p.m. or later. What prompted my contacting Red Phone is the death recently in San Jose by a senseless game of the same variety. Young males fueled by too much testosterone who feel it necessary to take their frustrations out by engaging in this risky behavior. Did you not learn a lesson from the two idiots who decided their pleasure was more important than the young girl's life and who now sit in Santa Clara County jail? Apparently not or you wouldn't be driving like a maniac as I sit here writing this now.
Get a private tour of ‘closed to the public’ Doan Ranch
Last November, the voters of Santa Clara County passed Measure Q, a $24 parcel tax that will support the work of the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority. The measure required a two-thirds majority for passage, a very high hurdle in an era where boisterous disagreement seems to accompany every issue. If you add to that obstacle the fact that the measure was a tax increase, it is clear that the passage of Measure Q is an impressive endorsement of our desire for open space, clean water, and a healthy environment.
Gavilan College’s “misplaced priorities” don’t help students
Much is said between the lines of the Gilroy Dispatch, 13 March 2015 page A2 article, “Gavilan College cites improvements.” The absence of any discussion by the college about serving the educational needs of students says much about the misplaced priorities of Gavilan’s decision-makers and those of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC).
NHL: Blackhawks turn back Sharks, 6-2
SAN JOSE—Chicago denied the San Jose Sharks a sweep of this week’s three-game homestand by earning four goals in the third period to turn back the hosts 6-2 Saturday afternoon at sold-out SAP Center.
