Anticipating a bountiful grape harvest

By the way our grapes are ripening fast and early, this year's harvest is going to be a bountiful, good year. To test for ripeness, most winemakers use a refractometer, a hand-held device that measures the brix (sugar content) of grapes, letting them know when the grapes are ready to be picked. Different grape varietals ripen at different times and at different vineyards. For instance, Chardonnay, Viognier and Pinot Noir grapes tend to ripen earliest - in September - with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon typically among the last grapes to be picked, well into October.

Birthday, baptism and music that’s contagious

Watched the Grammys and it proved that if you wait long enough everything will come back around ... even the Beach Boys and Paul McCartney. Though I'm not so sure those acts improved a ho-hum show this year. Tony Bennett, however, is another story. Born as Anthony Dominick Benedetto, he's 85, the voice is still crooningly clear and strong and his passion for the music is contagious. His Duets II album coming out soon is on my iTunes "buy it" list.

Sorry Ladies

Another article in TIME magazine this week on how it is harder for women to lose weight than men. Mostly due to the type of fat (subcutanious for women and viseral for men), and the fact that most men carry more muscle mass than women.
