I enjoy traveling. It is a great chance to explore new areas, learn about new people and taste different foods. It is an absolute treasure when I stumble upon some great new food, cuisine or way of preparing a special dish. This was the case when I went to England for the first time.

I had a couple of things on my mind last Tuesday. Since I cannot write about one, I will write about the other!

I'm a sick, twisted, attempted-murderer. Oh sure, I come off as a mild-mannered mom. But that's not the real me. The real me is one evil woman. And the worst part is – it's my vacuum that's making me evil.

What better way to cool down on a hot summer day than with a watermelon? The sweet, red middle inside the crunchy green rind has been enjoyed by people all over the world for thousands of years.

On a recent trip to Italy, I picked up some Italian, especially since I look more like an Italian expatriate than an American of Italian descent. That must be the case, because everywhere I went, Italians kept approaching me and speaking rapidly in Italian or, in other cases, like in the grocery store, when I put my fruit directly in the basket as we do in the U.S. without weighing it and pricing it first, yelling at me.

Since we introduced readers to the South Valley's most eligible bachelors last week, people have been clamoring for the most eligible bachelorettes. Ask and you shall receive. Here are the lovely single ladies who haven't settled for anyone less than Prince Charming. As with the bachelors, it seems that Gilroy is brimming with singles, while Hollister's and Morgan Hill's singles have run dry – we couldn't get a single bachelorette anywhere outside of Gilroy. But, we tried. In the meantime, gentleman, do we have a treat (or six) for you.

South Valley's unsigned teenage bands have a chance to play, compete and possibly win time in a recording studio at the upcoming South Bay's Battle of the Bands.

If Leonardo da Vinci really lived by a "code" as Dan Brown's best-seller suggests, I think it would have been this: seek the science in art and the art in science. With that philosophy, old Leo would feel right at home in Gavilan Community College's digital media studio.

There are a bevy of curious television outings this week, but none of them looks more quirky than KISS rocker Gene Simmons' homage to, well, himself, in "Gene Simmons Family Jewels." The show debuts with back-to-back episodes at 10pm Aug. 7 on A&E.
