Welcome the newest winery: Ross Vineyards

Our local grape vines have been thriving throughout the warm summer, the leaves soaking up the sunshine and clusters of grapes hanging heavily from the vines. Our wine growers have been busy with canopy management - pulling selected leaves from the vines to give the best sunlight exposure and air movement to the fruit. Veraison (when grapes start to ripen and change from green to purple) has come early this year, attracting birds and other critters that are looking for a tasty meal. But even though the grapes are turning color, they aren't ripe enough yet - so nets are draped over the rows to protect them from being picked clean by hungry birds.

Oh where, oh where does the buck stop ’round here?

Rough 49ers loss. This made matters worse: having to listen to Joe Buck on the TV broadcast. He's unfathomably annoying. Can't Sony or another leading edge TV manufacturer figure out a way to put the AM radio in the TV tuner and sync up the broadcast so you can watch the game and tune into the local radio broadcasting team? Perhaps some bright techie type in audience land has solved this problem. If so, let me know so I can pass on the good news and help stop the Buck stop here.

A special NY treat

Congregation Emeth of Morgan Hill invites local residents to an opportunity to sample the culture of New York City. The group will partner with South Valley Civic Theatre to present a special performance of  “The Producers” at 2:30 p.m. on July 12. This musical comedy, co-written by Borscht Belt comedian turned movie producer Mel Brooks, tells the story of two men who scheme to make money by producing a theatrical show guaranteed to fail, but which instead becomes an unexpected hit. This creates a business problem for the show’s producers, who must pay out profits to investors, of which there are a few too many. Based on a 1968 film that was controversial because of its irreverent story line, the musical version has since become a theatrical classic.

Mormon Spanish branch opening in Gilroy

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has a large presence in the South Valley. With multiple wards (congregations) in South San Jose, Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister, the LDS Church plays an important part in the local communities. Recently, the Gilroy location of the Gavilan Spanish branch was announced, giving more opportunities for Spanish-speakers to take part in LDS worship and other activities.

Cricket and car shows

On a recent Sunday afternoon, a group of us followed the Wine Trail of Santa Clara Valley and stopped in at Kirigin Cellars, which has been making wine on the property since 1916. There are so many things to love about Kirigin Cellars: to start with, their expansive property comprises rolling vineyards, over 1000 rose bushes and 100 sequoia redwoods.
