Honey bee heroes

At the start of a new year, some people make resolutions to better themselves, vowing everything from losing weight or cleaning out the garage, to quitting smoking. But here in the South Valley, a growing number of people have resolved to save the honey bee - and with good reason.

Explore hiking trails of former military base

Since the closure of Fort Ord in 1994, the 28,000 acres that comprised the military base have been spun off into various civilian uses. As a part of that process, on April 12, 2012, President Obama signed a declaration setting aside 14,650 acres—half of the former base—as Fort Ord National Monument. The Bureau of Land Management currently oversees 7,200 acres, and the remainder will be turned over to the BLM once the military completes environmental remediation.

Our amazing new library, a public facility to take pride in

Wow! Toured the new Gilroy Library this week and it’s a knock-your-socks-off facility. Impressive on many levels. In scouting college campuses with the three daughters over time, the importance of a library as a college community indicator became clear. It’s a functional showpiece that has to integrate design aesthetics with purpose. There’s a feel that goes along with the functionality and the new Gilroy library’s got it. It’s airy, it’s pleasing, it has meeting rooms and rooms for tech classes and a children’s story room with a padded carpet and a pull-down projection screen. There are places to study or read with broad street views and an expansive area for teaching reading along with good space for the Friends of the Library to store and sell donated books. Mark your calendar for a grand opening celebration on Saturday, April 28 … this is truly a fine public use addition that will serve the community for many years to come. The grassroots committee that supported the bond effort to get it built, the Gilroy City Council, the city staff and Santa Clara County Librarians have really accomplished something.

‘The Hound Of The Baskervilles’: A spoof to end all spoofs

Sir Arthur Cannon Doyle's ageless mystery thriller, “The Hound Of The Baskervilles,” has been adapted by British writers Steven Canny and John Nicholson as a brilliant burlesque send up that comes across as a hilarious parody. Doyle actually brought Sherlock back from the dead after he killed him and Moriarty off in “The Final Problem” in 1893. The demand for Sherlock, the monetary lure and—some say—his mother resulted in the Sherlock's return in “The Hound Of The Baskervilles.”

Striking sculptures

Anywhere else, Richard Starks’ sculpture garden would be the talk of the town and far beyond. But in Gilroy, his metal wonderland is just a couple miles up Hecker Pass Road from Gilroy Gardens and that attraction’s famously sculpted trees.
