United Way Silicon Valley held its annual South County United Breakfast on Thursday at the Morgan Hill Community Center.
Special guests Mayor Steve Tate and Gilroy Mayor Al Pinheiro welcomed the breakfast attendees with opening remarks. The breakfast highlighted the services that are available to aid people within the community of South County and the companies that help support them.
United Way Silicon Valley is currently partnering with Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, Center for Employment Training, Community Solutions, Friends of Vision Literacy among various others. These programs have all received three-year grants from United Way to help offer their services such as employment services or parenting workshops.
At the breakfast on Thursday, one person who benefitted from the Center for Employment Training shared his story.
“When I was 14, I began working so I could help out my mother and our family,” Sebastian Mafla said, according to a press release. “After I graduated from high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. CET is a place I can grow and show people I am capable of doing a good job. I have no words for how big the opportunities are.”
