The person who died July 21 in a big rig crash near the intersection of Ferguson Road on State Route 152 has been identified as 65-year-old Barbara Foster, of Gilroy, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
A 48-year-old Madera man, Gregory Wells, was driving a tractor-trailer combination westbound on S.R. 152 at approximately 5:25 p.m. when he approached traffic slowing down for intersection’s red light. Wells failed to stop and crashed into several vehicles, a California Highway Patrol press release stated.
The big rig then veered into the eastbound lane, collided with more vehicles and continued off the south edge of the road while pushing a sedan. Wells’ tractor-trailer ultimately came to rest in an agricultural field.
Foster’s sedan then became engulfed in flames, and fire personnel later pronounced her dead at the scene, authorities said.
The big rig’s cab also caught fire—but two bystanders helped to get him to safety. Including Wells, nine people were injured and three sustained major injuries.
According to the CHP, drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision and Wells was not charged with a crime.
