Crime news

The Gilroy Police Department was involved in a high speed chase Friday, according to Gilroy Police Sgt. Joseph Deras.

Members of the GPD Anti-Crime Team saw parolee-at-large Antonio Vasquez, 38, of San Martin driving a green, 2003 Dodge Ram that had been reported stolen out of San Jose.

The pursuit started at around 2:30 p.m. as officers attempted to stop Vasquez near the intersection of Murray Avenue and Tomkins Court in Gilroy. The chase, which at times exceeded speeds of 100 mph on county roads and the freeway, was brought to an end when GPD officers performed a PIT maneuver on the truck at the intersection of Leavesley Road and Swanston Lane in Gilroy.

Vasquez has been booked on charges of felony evading police, parole hold, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle with priors, possession of methamphetamine for sale and resisting arrest, according to Sgt. Deras.

After being processed at Gilroy Police Department, Vasquez was transferred to Santa Clara County Jail.

Officers from California Highway Patrol and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Deputies assisted GPD with the pursuit. There were no injuries to officers or civilians.

South Valley Middle School, 385 IOOF Ave., was briefly on lockdown because of the pursuit and subsequent arrest, said Sgt. Deras.

Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the GPD Anti-Crime Team at 408-846-0350.
