Fed up with bells

“I want to comment about vendors on street corners and those guys who push around the ice cream carts, or ride their bikes with the carts. They come through my neighborhood, with bells ringing. There are apartments in the alley behind my house, so the guys will stop at my driveway and sit there ringing the damn bells. It’s really irritating. Can these people go around selling things from a little cart? Is that legal? I’d appreciate an answer Red Phone. Thanks.”

Red Phone:

The Red Phone covered this topic in the past, but is more than happy to reiterate what it learned from Gilroy Police Community Services Officer Gary Muraoka. The following information was provided by Muraoka via e-mail:

“All street vendors must have a business license by the city and must have a transient vendor permit from the city. Street vendors can only stay in one location for a maximum of 10 minutes to conduct a sale, then they must move on. Street vendors are checked by the community service officers to ensure they have the proper licenses and permits. Street vendors that do not have the proper license or permits are documented and forwarded to city hall for their license application. Repeat offenders may be issued a citation for a municipal code infraction.”

So caller, if the vendor is bothersome, your best bet is to contact GPD at 846-0350 and let the community service officers check on licenses and issue citations if necessary.

Wanna, wanna, wanna

“Since the firefighters and the police department are fighting with the city about what they should get because the police are getting that, I would like to know how many Gilroy police officers have been hurt or killed in the history of Gilroy and same with the firefighters. I think that would help in deciding. I know their job is dangerous, and I couldn’t run into a burning building, but that might help make a decision on what they should get in benefits and so on. If they’re hurt and they can’t work, that’s one thing, but just because they’re 50 and they want to retire … well, there’s a lot of wannas, but we don’t all get what we wanna. Thanks.”

Red Phone:

It found your question interesting and Red Phone doesn’t believe it could do it justice in its column. It passed your comment along to the City Editor for consideration in a future article.

Dogs allowed

“As a newer Gilroyan, I really enjoy going to Christmas Hill Park and was wondering if I can take my dog there. Is it a dog-friendly park?”

Red Phone:

Dog-friendly it is, caller, but to a point. It checked with officials at Christmas Hill Park and was told that dogs are allowed there, but not off-leash.

Woe is it

Good callers, the Red Phone needs to share its troubles and woes – once again. It reminds those of you with major issues over stories and editorials or anger or love for politicians to please take a moment and send a letter to the editor at [email protected].

And another reminder: It takes time to get to calls. Keep in mind that the Red Phone has a running log of comments, questions and complaints and does its best to get to each. If you do not see your call published in a week or two, it requests you do not call in four more times to remind it about your previous call. Should you do this, Red Phone reserves the right to ignore all your calls.
