A veteran educator and longtime Gilroyan recently appointed as principal of Glen View Elementary School is looking forward to meeting her new school community.
“I’m a people person,” said Principal Corina Sapien. “Relationships are important to me.”
Sapien may have started her new job as Glen View’s principal Monday but she’s been a teacher or administrator in the Gilroy Unified School District since 1989. She started off as a teacher at South Valley Middle School where she taught core, English as a second language and Spanish classes.
After that, the bilingual educator served as an assistant principal at Rod Kelley Elementary School and worked in the human resources department at the school district office. Most recently, she worked as a facilitator at Rod Kelley.
Originally from San Jose, Sapien’s family moved to Gilroy when she was 13. She is married with a 17-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son, both of whom attend Gilroy public schools.
Sapien, 46, replaces Glen View’s former principal, Scott Otteson, who was transferred to El Roble Elementary several weeks ago to fill the vacancy left by that school’s former principal, Iraida Pisano, who was removed from her post last spring.
Sapien will receive an annual salary and benefits package of $134,022.
Otteson will work closely with his former school’s new principal throughout the school year and will continue to be a presence on campus, said Superintendent Deborah Flores.
“He’ll be a tough act to follow,” Sapien said.
While she already knew several teachers at Glen View, the new principal had a chance to meet the majority of them this week.
“They’re awesome,” she said of her staff. “They’re totally dedicated and hard working. They’re very warm and welcoming.”
Like Otteson, Sapien said she plans to be accessible to the school community by making her rounds of the classrooms and spending time on the playground with the students during recess. Her relationship with the school’s parents is also a top priority, she said.
“I love working with parents so my hope is to be actively involved with the parent club,” she said.
