Gilroy High’s varsity baseball team started its first winning streak of the season Tuesday by winning a road game against the North Salinas Vikings 12-4.

The victory gives the Mustangs (2-4, 1-0) two wins in a row after beating Carmel 10-7 Saturday, as well as a strong start in the first game of Tri-County Athletic League play.

Gilroy’s bats were on fire in the first two innings as the Mustangs scored three runs in both frames. The Mustangs then added another run in the fifth and five in the seventh for some insurance.

After beginning the season winless in its first four games, Gilroy seems to be finding a comfort level.

“After a rough preseason it was a great start to league” Gilroy coach Clint Wheeler said. “You can see the kids are starting to play like we know they can play – a lot more relaxed and having fun.”

Gilroy’s Taylor Chris and Roberto Celestino both had three hits, with Celestino recording two doubles, and Jordan Holler and Charlie Duffy both had two hits for the Mustangs, with each getting a triple.

“A bunch of guys chipped in with one or two (RBI),” Wheeler said.

James Lafuente got the win after pitching five innings and allowing four runs while Chris Salter came on in relief to close out the final two innings.

The Mustangs will be back at home Thursday when they host the Vikings for a rematch. Wheeler said the game most likely won’t be anything like what happened between the lines Tuesday.

“Its hard to say,” he said. “They had 27 guys on their team. We’re expecting anything to come out of that.”

First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
