GILROY – Last minute voters trickled into Gilroy precincts before poles closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday night. At two of the more frequented precincts in town – the Gilroy Senior Center and the Brownell Middle School library – poll workers described voter turnout as “well ahead” of what they expected.

As of 7:30 p.m. 468 voters cast ballots at the Senior Center, roughly 120 more than were cast in March during the primary election, poll workers said. Over at Brownell, more than 450 voters had been tallied by poll workers at 7:45 p.m., 15 minutes before the voting deadline.

Those numbers match the voter-turnout predictions of 45 to 50 percent made by the Santa Clara County registrar’s office over recent days.

“We were so busy today we didn’t even take breaks,” said Senior Center poll worker Felicia Rosas. “We’ve had to have people wait in line. We didn’t have enough booths.”
