SAN JOSE – Anchorpoint Christian baseball is one win away from title town.
Beating Calvary Chapel 12-2 Tuesday, the Warriors will need to follow up the victory with a similar result to capture its second Coastal Athletic League championship in school history.
“We’re getting hot at the right time and it’s fun to watch,” Anchorpoint assistant coach Johnny Ramirez said. “We’re all real proud about where we’re at to now.”
Senior Ryan Tapia earned the win in four innings for the Warriors, striking out eight batters, walking three and hitting one. Josh Ignagni, a junior, came in for three innings of relief to close out the game.
Offensively, the Warriors continued to get eye-opening consistency from Travis Thompson, who went 5-for-5 at the plate to boost his league batting average to .792. He is hitting .672 overall on the season, which ranks second in the Central Coast Section, third in the state, and 13th in the nation, Ramirez said. Josh Brendle also had an excellent afternoon at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.
“That’s how you win games,” Ramirez said of the Warriors’ run production. “But it’s not just that with Ryan pitching like he is.”
Tapia is expected to take the mound again Thursday to try and seal the league title, which would be the second in the program’s four-year history.
An often overlooked part of the game is how well a team runs the base paths, but not in Anchorpoint’s case. The Warriors have successfully stolen 158 bases on 161 attempts this season, Ramirez said. Tuesday’s victory featured 15 of those steals.
“We create havoc with our speed,” Ramirez said. “We see a weak spot – the catcher isn’t gonna throw anybody out – and we’re going to take advantage.”
The Warriors, 5-2 in the CAL, outhit their opponents 15-4 and also held their own on defense, committing just one error. Anchorpoint will wrap up the regular season Thursday at 4 p.m. when Calvary Chapel comes to Gilroy.
