GILROY – A small fish in a big pond rarely finds success, but Anchorpoint Christian basketball coach K.C. Adams felt there was no other way to make sure his team would improve than to schedule tougher competition in the preseason.

The results have been a mixed-bad, but the effort Adams has seen has been consistent. The boys are 2-3, while the girls are 2-2.

“We played schools way over our head, but I put them in those games so we could be better for league,” said Adams, who coaches both squads. “There’s only seven guys on the boys’ team and six girls’ on the girls team, so it’s tough on them.”

A 73-44 loss by the boys to North Salinas, a school with an enrollment exponentially bigger than that of the Anchorpoint, has been tempered by solid wins over Anzar (54-49) and Monte Vista Christian (79-62).

Junior guard Josh Ignagni leads the team in scoring. Along with Marcus Harrell, Christian McCrimmon, Samuel Apolinar and Brian Orr, the Warriors sport a guard-heavy lineup. Colton Minyard, Giovani Gastello and Shaq Johnson occupy the frontcourt spots.

The girls have been led by senior forward Chelsea Urbanski, who started this season on a scoring tear, Adams said, picking up where she left off last year. Adrianna Osuna and Ellen Pearce fill the rest of the frontcourt slots, while Adams uses Gladys Cruz, Tina Lloyd and Brooke Shrull at the guard positions.

“This is probably the teams with the biggest heart I’ve had, the boys and the girls,” Adams said.

“We’re short but mighty.”

Both teams will be playing Saturday at Oceana High School in Pacifica. The girls will begin at 1 p.m. and the boys will start at 2:30 p.m. The girls and boys will then begin Coastal Athletic League play Monday when they host Calvary Christian at 6:45 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively, at South Valley Middle School.
