Transferring your weight is a key to just about every sport.
Transferring your weight is a key to just about every sport. If you are trying to get an object such as a ball from you to someplace else you must transfer your weight. Watching a quarterback step forward to fling a pass 40 yards downfield doesn’t happen without stepping in to the pass and pushing off their back leg. You will hear commentators talk about a weak pass when they “threw off their back foot” meaning they didn’t push off during the pass.

The golf swing is just like throwing a ball. The swing will be more successful if you push off your right side during the downswing just like the quarterback pushes off his right leg when throwing a pass.

A main key is to make sure you have some weight on your right leg at the top of your backswing to push off. How much weight should be on your right leg depends on what club you are hitting. Short irons such as your sand wedge up to your 7 iron you should be pretty balanced at the top.

Middle irons such as your 6 iron through 4 iron you should have about 60 percent of your weight on your right leg. Long irons and fairway woods should have about 75 percent of your weight back and the driver should be around 90 percent.

As you see the longer the club the more weight you transfer back to the right leg at the top. The more weight at the top the more you can transfer through during impact to acheive that long shot you desire.

Remember, when all else fails, take a lesson. You’ll be surprised how much we can help.
