All nine Mustangs scored at least one goal as the Gilroy High girls varsity water polo team kicked off the season with an offensive fireworks display, defeating visiting Monterey 22-6 on Wednesday.

Senior Michelle Shields scored six times, seniors Nicole Nelsen and Lauren Rhodes tallied four each and senior Chelsea Hill had three, as the Mustangs jumped out to an 12-3 halftime advantage and didn’t let off the gas pedal. Leah Ailes with her two goals and Francesca Comin, Angiolina Vanni and Heather O’Connor with one each, joined the scoring barrage.

Hill put the Mustangs on the board less than a minute into the contest and by the end of the first seven minutes – and two scores each from Shields and Rhodes – the Mustangs held a 5-1 advantage.

The scoring continued in bunches during the second period. Nelsen carried the load, depositing three of her goals as the Mustangs increased their lead to 12-3 by the break.

Boys varsity

Junior Michael Shields found the back of the cage five times but it wasn’t enough as the Gilroy High boys varsity water polo team dropped a 17-9 decision to Monterey on Wednesday in Gilroy.

After the Toreadors took a 7-1 midway through the second period, two goals by Allen Linseth and one from Shields, the Mustangs cut the lead in half to 8-4. However, the Toreadors didn’t allow GHS to get any closer.

Daniel Fisser also scored for the Mustangs.
