Hi, I was reading the Dispatch about the deconstruction of the
animal shelter, the San Martin Animal Shelter.
Future of the Animal Shelter
“Hi, I was reading the Dispatch about the deconstruction of the animal shelter, the San Martin Animal Shelter. I was wondering why they didn’t really make any suggestions about what people could do to ensure this doesn’t happen, and that money is put into these programs to help the animals. Do you guys have any suggestions or maybe someone else? Thanks.”
Red Phone:
It contacted Don Gage, Santa Clara County Supervisor, to find an answer for you.
“Plans for a animal shelter are in the future, it is included in the capital project plans, which are dependent on funds for the county, which in turn, will be facing budget cuts of $150 to $200 million, so at this point they might not have an opportunity to build a shelter,” Gage said.
Friends of the San Martin Animal Shelter, are a group that supports the shelter and anyone interested in helping can join.
Gage added that the county is mandated by the state to provide an animal shelter for county residents, but they have not received any money from the state for this and in turn are not required to take animals from those who live in the city, but will in an emergency and if they have room. Thank you caller for your concern.
Grouchy Old Neighbors
“Let me start out by saying how much I love my neighborhood! I live in a very kid-friendly area in Gilroy, populated with many wonderful families young and old. With that being said, I am beyond speechless at what I witnessed this afternoon while standing in my front yard. Just like any Sunday afternoon on my street, there were a dozen or so kids running around, riding their bikes and scooters. Around the corner comes a mom-friend of mine jogging in the street, while her young sons ride their bikes safely on the sidewalk.
“As they approach, an elderly neighbor is watering his front curb strip. Instead of stopping his watering or pointing the hose down to let the kids pass, he stubbornly keeps the water on full blast and squirts the kids in the face. Then, instead of any kind of apology, he yells at the kids that they shouldn’t ride on the sidewalk!
“Of course, this neighbor is well-known to be quite a grouch, but is that any kind of excuse to be completely inconsiderate and rude to a 5-year-old boy? If that was an adult walking by, would he have stopped and given them the courtesy of allowing them to walk by? Or would he have just squirt them in the face too? Does he save his grouchiness for children only? Sounds like your classic bully – he should be ashamed of himself!”
Red Phone:
Well, caller he sounds like the neighbor from H-E- double hockey sticks, and I’m sure we’ve all had neighbors like that or have known someone who always wakes up with a frown and goes through the day perpetually angry at the world. Be thankful, good caller, that you and your other neighbors go through life smiling at the world. Maybe some of you should do something nice for him. Take him a homemade pie. If he continues to be a grouch, well, you tried and will be the better for it.
