Let Elected Officials Run The City

Isn’t there a law that you have to have your headlights on if
you use your windshield wipers? I can’t believe how many people,
more than 50 percent every time it rains and I’m out; they don’t
have their lights on.
Wipers on, lights on

“Isn’t there a law that you have to have your headlights on if you use your windshield wipers? I can’t believe how many people, more than 50 percent every time it rains and I’m out; they don’t have their lights on.

Police probably have that on a little priority on that and what would they do? Flip a U-turn and site these people? But it’s for people’s safety and I can’t believe how many people do that.”

Red Phone:

Yes caller there is, it’s vehicle code 24400, titled Headlamps on Motor Vehicles. It simply states that your vehicle should be operated during darkness or inclement weather, or both, with at least two lighted headlamps. ‘Inclement weather’ is a condition requiring the windshield wipers to be in continuous use due to rain, mist, snow, fog, you get the point. This was added to the code and made effective Jan. 1.

Thank you caller for reminding drivers to be safe and follow the law.

Printing drivers’ names/

“I just want to know why you haven’t published the name of the driver who hit that little boy. The other driver, Robertina Franco, has had her name published all over the paper, but you guys refuse to release the other driver’s name. I am in no way a friend of or related to her, but I think it’s completely unfair how you have treated this. I know you haven’t published anything because I read the paper everyday, so can you please give me an answer on this?”

Red Phone:

Caller, we haven’t printed one name because police won’t release it – and we did print the other. Gilroy police have refused to release accident reports describing the other two accidents, and the DA decided not to press charges against the driver who hit and killed Julio Gonzalez.

The Dispatch has reported that Stephen Lake will face vehicular manslaughter charges for the accident that killed Norm Watenpaugh, but deputy district attorney Amir Alem said no court dates have yet been scheduled for Lake. The Dispatch will continue to follow Lake’s case as it goes through the court system.

Web site feature inactive

“I’m online at the Gilroy Dispatch Web site and you guys have a Gilroy country cam up top and when you click it, it always says system error. So I was just wondering why you have that extra feature and no one can use it.”

Red Phone:

Thanks for pointing that out, good caller. It’s an ongoing technical issue that we’re trying to resolve. We’ll take down the icon until it’s fixed and operative.
