Why Not Go With Your Best, Coach?

CALLER 1: Just a couple comments on the girls softball team. We just had the Annie Lynch Tournament in Salinas. I am quite concerned because I think there was a coaching error that shouldn’t have happened. They went into the silver rather than the gold because they lost one game. In the championship game in the silver bracket our No. 3 pitcher started instead of our No. 1 pitcher. Immediately we fell behind 3-0 and they left her out there for another inning, and they got another run. We did come back to make it 4-4, but by then it was too late.

GREEN PHONE: We checked on this before Gilroy played its second game of the tournament. Evidently, the Mustangs were the only team to play one game the first weekend which had something to do with a misunderstanding about when the Junior Prom was held.

As far as the game in question, our understanding is that the coach was trying to check out pitchers that she could use throughout the season. Who a coach chooses to use is totally up to the individual. But with the Tri-County Athletic League being as competitive as it is, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have as many pitchers available as possible if nothing else than to give opponents different looks. Other than that, if you choose to second guess the coach why not ask her directly?

CALLER 2: Props to Armando Gonzalez. John Wooden said that success is the peace of mind that comes from doing your best. Coach Gonzalez, you’ve done a great job. My boy is in kindergarten and loves it. You’re positive, encouraging and tough when they need it.

GREEN PHONE: Nice words for a “tough love” type of coach. The proof is in the results. It’s nice when finishing eighth in the state is considered a “down” year for the Gilroy wrestlers.
