In her first year coaching golf at Columbia University, the Lions won their first Ivy League title, breaking a stranglehold by Princeton and Yale.
Columbia finished at 933 to beat the Tigers (943) by 10 strokes and the Bulldogs (953) by another 10 shots. Also, the Lions had the top two individuals. Sara Ovadia opened with a 1-under-par 71 at Trenton Country Club in West Trenton, N.J., and was one of three golfers in the 70s during all three rounds, finished at 226. Teammate Stevy Loy, who led after two rounds, finished next at 230.
Williams, 36, coached girls’ basketball and both golf teams at Gilroy High last year. She led the girls basketball team to an undefeated Tri-County Athletic League season during the 2005-06 season. Both the girls basketball and boys golf teams qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs during Williams’ last season at Gilroy.
She was named coach last June at Columbia, which placed fifth last year in the Ivy league Championships.
