It isn’t every day that Gilroy artists get to showcase their affinity for the Garlic Capital in artwork while vying for the choice of the people as garlic sizzles in the air.
On April 15, Garlic Festival organizers announced the winner of the Gilroy Garlic Festival Art Poster Contest. Aliza Alkoby of Tarzana, Calif. was declared this year’s winner. She second place in 2013.
Alkoby’s mostly oil and mixed-media painting depicts a garlic braid tied to a fencepost with a soft-focus field and rolling hills in the background.
Art reproductions
Festival organizers will reproduce and sell posters for $10 at this year’s Gilroy Garlic Festival, slated for July 25-27.
Second place was awarded to Julie Franco of Gilroy, who also received the same honor in 2001. Cory Still of Gilroy took home third place.
Sixteen total entries were received.
People’s choice
The second and third-place winning posters, along with eight others selected by the jury, will be displayed in the People’s Choice competition where festival-goers can vote for their favorite entry. The additional eight artists include Maria Hullum, Diana Moran, Priscilla Martinez, Izumi Kurokawa, Ruth Johnson Irving, Jonathan Sheets, Whitney Pintello and Sierra Silva.
