Dear Editor:
The high-energy parade down Tenth Street and following festivities at Christmas Hill Park last Monday were great ways for Gilroy to celebrate Memorial Day, to remember those lost in war, and to come together as a community. It was an honor for the Garlic Festival Court and I to participate in this event.
The 2003 Gilroy Garlic Queen Pageant was May 3 at Gavilan College Theater. This year there were 10 contestants (I think this is a record-breaking number) that put on an amazing show. There are some people who should definitely be recognized and thanked for their contributions to the pageant … The event was headed by pageant chairwoman Grace Smith and co-chair Kim Lemos, who dedicated incredible amounts of time and energy. The life-saving backstage helpers and patient Gavilan College sound/music crew were great. Generous scholarships were donated by Val Filice (Garlic Godfather Specialties), Bob Lynch Ford, the Past Presidents, and ConAgra Foods. The emcee team, SakaBozo, were, as always, hilarious. Support from the Garlic Festival Association was very strong, and greatly appreciated. Contestants received wonderful goodie-bags of supplies donated by The Galleria. Dispatch reporter Dave Steffenson and photographer Bill Strange covered the pageant extremely well. Thank you to all that helped with the pageant (including many more not named) and everyone who attended.
The Court and I have a summer filled with fun and garlicky events. We are extremely excited to be a part of this special, silver, 25th anniversary Garlic Festival. I know that the energy and enthusiasm from the pageant will carry on throughout the year. It is truly an honor, a privilege and a dream come true to be able to represent Gilroy.
Melissa Noto, Gilroy,
Garlic Festival Queen
