“It was painful and sore,” Yafai said. “He was walking around school (Monday), but said he wouldn’t try running right now.”
Junior varsity and Freshman Report
The JV Mustangs beat Oakland Tech 28-8 at home Friday. For Gilroy’s first score of the night, Steven Galtman caught a 20-yard pass from quarterback Steven Martinez. The three other Mustang touchdowns were scored on short runs by Stephen Gutierrez (5 yards), Travis Reyes (5 yards) and Octavio Duran (4 yards). The JV squad is now 4-1.
The freshman team remained undefeated with a 42-0 defeat of Sobrato Thursday evening.

HIT OF THE GAME – In the third quarter, defensive end Steven Quistian leveled an Oakland Tech defender, enabling fullback Stefon McCrimon to catch a Nick Tovar pass and extend it into 20-yard catch-and-run down the sideline for a first down.
PLAYER OF THE GAME – #32 Jojo Gutierrez The junior tailback picked up the slack and kept the Mustang running game going when Justin Sweeney left the game with an injury. Gutierrez also a top sprinter in TCAL track, ran for 104 yards on 12 carries.
STAT OF THE GAME – Gilroy recorded five sacks that cost Oakland Tech a loss of 42 yards. Defensive end Bobby Best had three of those sacks and Efrain Salinas and Carlos Estrada each added one.
