Gilroy – Generation gap? Not in the Russo family.
This past weekend, 7-year-old Gilroy Hawks wrestler Ryan Russo won a wrestling title at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, the same high school at which his grandfather, Chauncey Russo, was a wrestling state champion in the early 1960’s.
With his grandfather looking on, Ryan Russo, a 49-pounder in the bantam weight division, took first at the Greco-Roman Freestyle Santa Clara Valley Wrestling Championships Saturday by 12-0 score in the final match. Russo outscored his first three opponents of the tournament 31-2.
“Ryan has only been wrestling for a few months,” said his father Danny Russo. “Seeing my son’s face light up when he won the championships made all of his family very proud.”
Two other young Hawks wrestlers also won titles at the event. Mikyo Duyao was crowned champion of the 60–pound bantam weight division and Syriah Jones took the title in the 40 to 45-pound division.
