Stat Guy

Nothing symbolizes back-to-school for high school students more than the first home football game. Like ants following a trail of crumbs, we all find our way back to Mustang Stadium to cheer on our team. Last Friday, I got to witness the game in a whole new way. After being told by my parents I needed to go out and get a job, I found one that allows me to earn a few bucks and watch football at the same time. I am now the official GHS “Stats Man” for the Dispatch. How cool is that!

As I anticipated attending my first game last Friday, I was very apprehensive. I didn’t know what to expect. Last year, I watched all the games from the stands while eating nachos and socializing with my friends. Now I had to actually pay close attention, keeping detailed stats of every play. Luckily for me, I had Dispatch reporter Brett Edgerton by my side to assist me when in need.

Standing down on the field gave me a whole new respect for Coach Yafai and his staff. I didn’t appreciate how many coaches it takes to run a football team and their level of intensity was impressive. Shouting orders at their players left and right, ‘do this, don’t do that,’ must be exhausting. But for me, the biggest difference from being on the field was being able to see the emotion of the players. After every big hit, turnover or score, I felt a surge of energy erupt through the sidelines. The fans felt it, too. A win is a great way to start the school year. Welcome back Mustangs!
