Gilroy – The Youth Commission, a group of individuals ages 13 to 18 that represent the youth of the City of Gilroy, is recruiting new applicants that reside in the Gilroy Unified School District. The Youth Commission fulfills many responsibilities, the most important of which is to make recommendations to the City Council on issues involving the youth of the City of Gilroy. These issues include health and safety, schools, recreation and other concerns and interests that are important to the youth of Gilroy.

Terms are one to two years. Applications are available from the City Clerk’s Office, 7351 Rosanna St. All applications must be turned in by 5pm Aug. 24. The City Council will conduct interviews for appointment to the Youth Commission at 7pm Sept. 10, at the Gilroy City Council Chambers, 7351 Rosanna St.

Evangelism Training Course Offered in Morgan Hill

Morgan Hill – The Way of the Master Evangelism Training Classes are offered from 5 to 9pm today, or from 1 to 5pm Sunday, at West Hills Community Church, 16695 DeWitt Ave., Morgan Hill.

‘King Lear’ Revived on Stage in San Juan Bautista

San Juan Bautista – The 17 members of the Gavilan STAR program will perform “The Daughters of Lear,” their adaptation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear.” The shows are Monday and Tuesday at 7:30pm in El Teatro Campesino, 705 Fourth St., in San Juan Bautista. Tickets are available at the theater box office at $12 per adult, $10 per student or senior and $5 per child.

Tourney Raises Funds for Youth, Teens and Seniors

Gilroy – Texas Hold ‘Em teams may register for the End of Summer Tournament set for 10am Saturday Aug. 25 at the Gilroy Senior Center.

The four-person teams must include a $60 entry fee to play in the one-day event. Team members play at different tables. Proceeds from the 14th tournament in the series produced by the Gilroy Community Services Department are used for youth, teen and senior programs. The All-In Four is the defending team champion, Barbara Drewitz the individual champion. Team registration continues through Friday Aug. 17.

AARP Safe Driving Class Registration Information

Gilroy – The nations first and largest refresher course for motorists 50 and older will be held Aug. 18. Participants will familiarize themselves with driver safety and new laws. Three-year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on own auto insurance upon completion of this one-day program. There are no tests in the course. Class materials and certified instructor are provided by AARP. There is a minimal DMV certificate fee.

Sons of Italy Annual Barbecue in the Park

Gilroy – The Sons of Italy, Gilroy Lodge, is holding its annual barbecue Sunday, Aug. 19, at Christmas Hill Park.

Festivities begin at noon with appetizers followed by a New York steak barbecue at 1pm, including salad, beans, garlic bread and drinks. Adults $15, children younger than 12 $7.50. Entertainment includes music, a raffle and pleasant company.
