SACRAMENTO – Fighting out of local gym Universal Strength Headquarters run by brothers Anthony and Angel Figueroa, 16-year-old Gilroy resident Brianna Van Buren made her amateur mixed martial arts debut last weekend in Sacramento at a charity event organized by Coaching Kids.

Van Buren took on Delicia Velasquez, who had already compiled a 10-4 record, and fought her way to an unanimous decision victory in the 125-pound flyweight class.

“It was a really big win for her because her opponent had a bunch of fights already,” Angel said.

Only training for 10 months under the guides of the Figueroas, Van Buren has already seen some success participating in various kick boxing and grappling tournaments, Angel said.

Van Buren and the rest of the youth AntDawg’s USH! fight team will next fight at a Grappling X event on March 27 in Fresno.
