Don’t just shop local; shop Gilroy.
Forget the glossy wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons. For those interested in a little more meaningful gifts there are several items that should be on the list. Some items a little more Gilroy than others but nonetheless reminding family and friends of where the heart is.
1. Edibles
There are several food items that can be purchased at a local store. From well-known products made by Christopher Ranch, like their garlic & ginger stir fry ($3.99) or minced roasted garlic ($2.99); hot sauces like The Pepper Plant Chipotle Sauce ($4.99); Andy’s Original Recipe Rub ($9.99); and Garlic World Onion Stuffed Olives ($4.99). Everyone eats so it’s safe to say these gifts will be a hit. Garlic World: 4800 Monterey Highway, Gilroy, (800) 537-6122, garlicworld.com.
2. Beverages
Along the same lines of food there are also the multiple award-winning wineries that call Gilroy home. There is Rapazzini Winery conveniently located near the Garlic Shoppe and Garlic World. There’s Sarah’s Vineyard on Hecker Pass Hwy or Kirigin Cellars, the region’s oldest winery. Their specialty bottle is Vino de Mocca  ($19.90 plus shipping and tax).  Kirigin Cellars, 11550 Watsonville Road, Gilroy, 847-8827, Kirigincellars.com.
3. Kokoro Candles
It might be fair to say that Gilroy sisters got tired of garlic’s aroma. With over 10 different scents, their vegan-friendly soy candles are hand poured and created from 100% essential oils. They come in glass containers ($24-30) or in tins ($12). Contact: 848-5136, shop.kokorocandles.com.
4. Art
Every community is filled with its artist and it’s not any different in Gilroy. Whether it’s photography or painting, sculptures, or ceramics. Local artists produce work that not only they can be proud of but also the buyer. Elissa Sue creates watercolor artwork that she sells at artisan markets and online. She has a handmade, made to order 2016 wall calendar on 8.5 x 11 matte paper ($28). The images can be framed and also includes a silver bulldog clip.  Elissa Sue Watercolors: etsy.com/shop/elissasuewatercolors.
