DEAR EDITOR:
So. Han Tran of 5 Day Furniture wants a judge to decide. All well and good; we all want to be certain that the zoning laws are fair and fairly enforced.
We all want to be sure that no one gets undue favoritism – including 5 Day Furniture. I have a business in the same zone area that 5 Day is in. If they win, can I retail whatever I want at my location, as often as I want? Can other businesses build facilities in residential neighborhoods that are zoned for non-commercial or industrial uses?
Mr. Tran accuses Mayor Springer and the city council of racism. Let me think: fairly enforcing the zoning regulations no matter one’s ethnicity is defined as racism. Is not saying that Vietnamese are unfairly discriminated against if they can’t flaunt the regulations that the rest of us have to abide by racism? Racism is the favoring of one ethnic or racial group preferentially over others, and that is what Mr. Tran is demanding. Who is the racist?
Mr. Tran’s attorney may decide to sue the mayor for slander? How can the attorney decide? Only the plaintiff can make that decision. The last time I looked in the dictionary, “idiotic” was an adjective, not a noun. Hopefully, the attorney understands grammar.
Perhaps Mr. Tran would like to sue me: I would describe his and his partners behavior as cynical, manipulative, dishonest, threatening and disruptive of public tranquility. For your information, Mr. Tran, I am describing my opinion of your behavior, not you.
