GILROY – Jose Garcia, a San Juan Bautista resident, led or was in the lead pack for most of the 10K race of the Halloween XIII Run on Oct. 25 – taking the tape in 39:39 to best all age groups.

The 54-year-old was the oldest overall winner in the history of local races including the Mt. Madonna Challenge, the Reek Runs and others hled in Gilroy or Morgan Hill. Garcia won the event for the second time with his victories coming 12 years apart. The seasoned runner was only three minutes off his 1991 pace.

Kelly Ramirez, a well-known local athlete, finished more than four minutes ahead of her nearest competitor, Marti Menz. Both women in the 40-49 age division were far ahead of the rest of the 45-person field as Ramirez finished in 42:53 and Menz followed in 47:43.

Dennis Egley, at 80 the oldest competitor in the field, placed second in the 70-plus division. Egley was the last to complete the race with time of 90:00, but he received an ovation when he crossed the finish line. Egley made it a little more challenging for himself by running straight on the levee instead of turning left on Miller Ave. Instead of a 10K, Egley was closer to eight miles.

Bill Wong, of Morgan Hill, led all 5K finishers with a time of 18:05. Elia Wun was the first overall woman – finishing in 24:10.
