GHS boys tennis top North Salinas, falls to Aptos
GILROY – The Gilroy High boys tennis team was on both sides of lopsided 7-0 decisions this week – falling in a non-league clash with Aptos and dominating in a T-CAL match against North Salinas.
The Mustangs traveled to Aptos on Wednesday and, although losing all seven bouts, managed to push three into third sets against a talented Aptos team – which swept Gilroy last year as well. Senior Mark Heisy came the closest to victory that day – dropping the third set, 6-4.
Returning to league action on Thursday, the Mustangs won all seven bouts against North Salinas to improve their T-CAL record to 2-1. Senior Robbie Marques won 6-2, 6-3; senior Jacob Pniewski won 6-2, 6-1; senior Ray Rivera won 6-0, 6-0; and No. 4 Mark Hsieh also won 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, the top tandem of Peter Adams and Anthony Christian rebounded from a 7-6 (7-4) first set loss to take the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4. In the No. 2 position, senior Tomas Carrillo and freshman PJ Jamal won in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. In the No. 3 spot, the duo of Chris Adams and Adam Smurthweite registered a 6-1, 6-0 decision.
In addition, Ryan McBrearty also won his exhibition match.
The Mustangs will square off against Palma on Tuesday leading up to their rivarly match against Live Oak on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
