Vigil raises awareness of sexual assault

Gilroy – A candlelight vigil will be held at Old City Hall to help raise awareness during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Community Solutions sponsors the event, designed to be an arena for individuals to come together and encourage those who need support.

The vigil will be 6:30 to 8:30pm, April 26.

Clean Air Award nominations taken

Gilroy – Nominations are now being accepted for the 16th annual Clean Air Awards. The awards honor businesses, organizations and individuals who have made the greatest contributions in six areas: demonstrating leadership and commitment to reducing air pollution; employing green building principles and smart growth; reducing greenhouse gas emissions; developing technology that reduces air pollution; raising public awareness of air quality issues; and implementing employee transportation or shuttle programs that reduce car use.

The deadline for nominations is May 5.

Concert for Two Pianos coming to Gav

Gilroy – Maria Amirkhanian and Andreas Werz will perform a Concert for Two Pianos, including classical works by Khachaturian, Bartok, and Rachmaninoffm and selections from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein on Friday, at 7:30pm at Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 students and seniors and can be purchased at Carol’s Hallmark, Porcella’s Music and Gavilan Bookstore.

Free services at Community Health Day

Gilroy – Free health screenings and medical advice will be available at the third annual Gilroy Community Health Day.

Local organizations have come together to provide free diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure screenings, dental exams, and nutrition services for Gilroy residents Saturday, May 20. The event will run from 11am to 3pm, at Rebekah Children’s Services, at 290 I.O.O.F Ave.

MH wind symphony performs

STAR produces Romeo and Juliet

San Juan Bautista – Youth ages 10 to 17 can register now for the Gavilan College Summer Theater Arts Repertory (STAR) program in San Juan Bautista. This summer, Gavilan College STAR at San Juan Bautista will produce an adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet.” The adaptation is tailored for young performers and will include music and dance. Tuition for the three-week program is $395.

STAR San Juan Bautista will meet Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm, July 25 through Aug. 12. Performances are scheduled for Aug. 11 and 12 at 8pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2pm.

Rehearsals and performances will take place at the El Teatro Campesino Playhouse, 705 Fourth St., San Juan Bautista.
