Problematic potholes

“Hi Red Phone, I’m calling about the condition of the street on Dowdy, between Sixth and Seventh. The street is riddled with potholes and I’d like to know who is in charge of repairs and when the repairs will be done. Thanks for your help.”

– “Can you find out if there are any plans to fix the growing pot hole located on the Northeast corner of Welburn and Kelton. When it fills with water it’s not easy to see but sure rattles your bones when you hit it.”

Red Phone:

Callers, no doubt you’re not the only ones facing this situation.

“Right now we are playing catch-up on the potholes because it was raining so much,” said City Operations Manager Carla Ruigh. “The rain is just very damaging to the asphalt when it goes that go long.”

Ruigh encourages anyone else who spots potholes to call them in.

“Our support staff will take care of it as soon as they can,” she said.

Residents can report potholes to the city’s public works department at 846-0444.

Kudos in order

“Cheers to Mr. Ron Ayala, eighth grade core teacher at Asencion Solorsano Middle School for taking his teaching the extra mile and taking 37 students and six other chaperones to Washington D.C. during the Easter Break week off. These 37 students were given the opportunity of a life time and they seized the moments.

“Mr. Ayala had a well-planned, well-thought-out trip. The group was on the move from before sun-up and well after sundown. There wasn’t a moment wasted and the students were absolutely wonderful. Not a problem with the students at all! The students will be talking about this trip for years to come. And hopefully this trip will become a tradition for Mr. Ayala and his students with support from the district.

“The trip was well worth the time, effort, and money. Just ask some students and Mr. Ayala!”

Red Phone:

Thanks for taking the time to send along an e-mail. With all that goes wrong in the world, the occasional happy comments it receives puts Red Phone in a good mood.

Too much going on

“This message is concerning our city government. There’s the whole downtown project which is pretty much going to put every business down that’s been here for the past 47 years. You have Santa Teresa Boulevard which is still not finished, still not completed two years later. Then you have at the end of Monterey Street – again, more money. And don’t forget our $55-million police station, OK? I think its about time the public needs to understand how much money the city government is spending and putting everybody out from under because they have the new Super Wal-Mart in town. It’s getting quite disgraceful.”

Red Phone:

OK, scratch its previous comment about being in a good mood. If people weren’t already aware of all the projects going on in Gilroy, you have brought them to attention. Thanks for the call, even though Red Phone’s not sure what Wal-Mart has to do with anything.

Readers:

Do you have a comment, complaint or compliment about an issue that affects Gilroy and its residents? Perhaps you’d like to offer up a compliment for a good job done by city workers? Just let the Red Phone know. But remember to leave a name and number when you call or e-mail. The Red Phone won’t publish this information – it will only be used if verification is necessary.
