DEAR EDITOR:
On behalf of the committee that organized the Gilroy High School Information Night for the Class of 2007 and transfer students, we want to gratefully acknowledge Susan Valenta, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, who publicized the event, organized a donation drive, and was a great cheerleader for our cause.
At a time when Gilroy High School is working hard to improve its reputation and to meet the needs of this community, this kind of support is like a breath of fresh air. It’s one thing to say you want to see the high school improve but quite another to be willing to do something about it. Thank you very much to the following Chamber members who came forward and validated our efforts: Community Bank of Central California, Gilroy Economic Development Corporation, Gilroy Premium Outlets, Pinnacle Urgent Care, Rosso’s Furniture, and Rug Décor.
Teachers, administrators and parents gave willingly of their time that evening in order to educate the community about the school’s academic and extra-curricular opportunities, and Superintendent Edwin Diaz, Assistant Superintendent Jacqueline Horejs, and Board of Education trustees were on hand to welcome people. But the true stars, hands down, were the GHS students themselves. Some sang in the choir, some played in the jazz band, and others sat on a panel to answer audience questions. Talented and articulate, they represented their peers well and sent a firm, clear message: We are proud to be Gilroy High School students.
Many families who came that evening had already decided to send their child to Gilroy High School and left feeling a lot more confident about their decision. Others came to collect information as they decide between public and private school. Obviously, the welcome mat is out for you at Gilroy High School, but we wish all those who came to the Information Night success in whatever academic choice they make.
If you were unable to attend the Information Night or if you attended but have some additional questions and concerns, please call the school at (408) 847-2424. Administrators, teachers, parents, students and alumni are available to help you and will return your call promptly.
