MONTEREY – United World Fitness Gym in Gilroy produced two California State Champions and a second-place finisher over the weekend at the Budweiser National State Championship Deadlift and Bench Press at the Monterey Fairgrounds.

The ageless wonder – 71-year-old strongman Jack Peters, of Gilroy – bench pressed 225 pounds for a first-place finish in the 68-74 age bracket and a state championship.

Hollister’s Al Tortorelli topped the Class I division for ages 40–46 by deadlifting 562 pounds for his state title, while 40-year-old doc Joe McMurray – an oral and maxillosacial surgeon with offices in Gilroy and Morgan Hill – placed second in the masters division for ages 40-46 by bench pressing 405 pounds.

All three competitors qualified for the Worlds in Las Vegas – scheduled for December. Both Tortorelli and McMurray placed fourth in the world last year.
