MORGAN HILL – A large chunk of ice fell from the sky Monday morning, shattering into 4- and 5-inch chunks as it landed on the rear deck of a house at 15430 La Alameda Drive, according to El Toro Fire Station Battalion Chief Brad Darbro. The ice is suspected to be airline waste, he said, similar to what is found in a portable toilet. No one was injured by the ice; the only reported damage at the residence was broken tree limbs. Morgan Hill Public Works employees transported the waste to the sewer plant in Gilroy.

Learn to rule the pool

GILROY – Gilroy Community Services is offering a Lifeguard Training Class at Gilroy High School Pool on April 5, 6, 12 and 13 from 9 to 5 p.m. The class will offer certification as a lifeguard. The instructor will be Aaron Bueno from the City of Milpitas Aquatics Center. Pre-registration is required and is done through Gilroy Community Services. 32 hours are required to complete the certification therefore participants must plan to attend all four dates. All those who complete the class will be given applications to apply for the Gilroy Community Services’ summer aquatic staff. Cost for the class will be $60. Spaces are limited so register early. ‘Let’s murder Marsha’

MORGAN HILL – Pintello Comedy Theater will present “Let’s Murder Marsha,” a clever comedy of mistaken intentions, through April 19. Want to be a garlic queen?

GILROY – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association is currently accepting applications for the 25th annual queen pageant, which will take place on Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Gavilan College Theater. Admission is $5. Contestant applications can be picked up through the Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St. or by calling the office at 842-1625. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 24; a resident of Gilroy, Hollister, Morgan Hill, San Juan Bautista or San Martin; single who has never been married and has no children; and a high school graduate by June 2003. The deadline to enter is March 27 by 5 p.m. Contestants are judged on the results of personal interview, talent, evening gown, garlic speech and overall poise and personality. Details: 842-1625.

Support ICF over breakfast

GILROY – The Italian Catholic Federation Branch 28, Gilroy is sponsoring a scholarship breakfast at St. Mary Cullen Hall, 11 First St., on Sunday, March 30 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice, milk and coffee. Donations are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit ICF charities and scholarship funds for local schools. Details: 847-5151.

20th annual Wildflower Run

MORGAN HILL – The 20th annual American Association of University Women’s Wildflower Run will be held on Sunday, April 13, starting at Live Oak High School, 1505 E. Main Ave., Morgan Hill. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.; 2K Kids’ Run (12 and under) at 8:30 a.m.; 10K Run (USATF certified) at 9 a.m.; and 5K Run/Walk at 9:10 a.m. The cost is $25, or $22 before April 4. Cost for a family is $50. The run/walk course is flat terrain on paved roads in the country around Morgan Hill. Proceeds fund scholarships for women. T-shirts, medals and prizes will be awarded. Caltrain fare structure changes

SAN JOSE – The Caltrain board will hold a public hearing Thursday, April 3 to discuss proposed changes to the fare structure and the proposal to move Caltrain to a proof-of-payment system, which would eliminate onboard ticket sales. Other proposed changes include: day passes would be replaced by round-trip tickets, ticket validators would be required with 10-ride tickets and one-way tickets would be valid for reduced periods (three hours for example). The public hearing comes after a nine-month fare study and three public meetings held in San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

The public hearing will begin at 10 a.m. and will be held at Caltrain’s headquarters at 1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos.
