Favorite Book: “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck

Book synopsis: Although it follows the movement of thousands of men and women and the transformation of an entire nation, “The Grapes of Wrath” is also the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, who are driven off their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Why is it your favorite book?: “When I was a child, my grandmother used to give me books instead of toys, so one of my favorite authors was John Steinbeck. I loved his books so much. But I think ‘Grapes of Wrath’ is one of my favorites, because it really describes the struggle of people who are downtrodden by economic circumstances that we can still relate to today.”

When and why did you read it?: “I read ‘Grapes of Wrath’ in high school because it was one of my requirements for my literature class.”

How do you use reading and writing every day?: “I write our newsletter. I’m sitting here writing a sponsor letter right now. … And I have to read the criteria that people use to give out money. So I’m reading and writing all the time.”
