SANTA CRUZ – The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s musical summer season drifts to a close today with park favorites that will sweep audiences off their feet and “Under the Boardwalk.”

The Drifters return to Santa Cruz to close out the 11-week 2003 series Pepsi Presents: Free Friday Night Bands on the beach bandstand.

The group will be accompanied by Will Porter and the All Stars for the shows at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. on the beach bandstand. Both concerts feature American Sign Language Interpreter Mo Moscovitz.

“The Drifters are always the perfect group to help us say good-bye to summer,” Boardwalk Promotions Director Paul B. Hammond said. “Their music brings back such fond memories, taking the audience on a warmly nostalgic journey.”

The Drifters’ recording career on Atlantic Records lasted from late 1953 to early 1966. During that time they cut numerous records that stand as milestones of sweet soul music, including “Up On The Roof,” “On Broadway” and “This Magic Moment.”

The name “Drifters” was chosen by Clyde McPhatter, the first in a long line of lead voices. He could not have chosen a better name, since members drifted in and out of the band from the very beginning. In fact, they had 12 different lead singers, 11 from other groups, and even boasted two members named Charlie Thomas who knew each other and were both originally from Virginia.

The Drifters today include original Drifter Bobby Hendricks, who has worked periodically with the group since 1957.
