Dear Editor:
Highway 152 starts at Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County and runs through Watsonville, Gilroy, Pacheco Pass and Los Banos to Chowchilla. It was up graded to four lanes divided years ago.
With the intrusion of San Luis Reservoir the highway from Los Banos to Don Pacheco Y has been flux. It is now four-lane divided, (Casa de Fruta has it’s own overpass). Oh if they had only built 12 miles more to Gilroy we wouldn’t have the mess we have now.
I have attended several meetings to upgrade the Gilroy to Pacheco Y Road; there has been no mention of four lanes, only turn lanes, lights, etc. They would help with traffic control, but do little to alleviate congestion. That section of road happens to be a “farm-to-market road,” not a freeway, the only way for the farmer to get to town thus adding to the general confusion.
I’ve mulled over this problem for several years.
The only answer I see is four lanes divided in which the traffic would rise over Don Pacheco Y through a cut in Dunn Hill over San Felipe Road across the Balsa Flats to 10th Street merging with U.S. 101 to a full freeway.
The big trouble with this is now sales tax fountains are being built on the way into Gilroy.
