GILROY – The 28th annual Mt. Madonna Challenge 6K and 12K walk/run event, a fund raiser for the South Valley Symphony, will take place on Sunday, Aug. 24, at Mt. Madonna County Park.

The 6K Salamander Walk and Race will commence at 8:30 a.m. while the 12K Mt. Madonna Challenge run is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Runners will gather at the Sprig Lake picnic area for registration or may register online at active.com.

The scenic course will take runners through groves of oak, manzanita and redwood trees. The 6K or 3.6-mile loop has an elevation gain of some 700 feet, while the 12K event will entail an elevation gain of 1,200 feet.

Due to limited parking, participants are urged to carpool. Shuttle service will be provided from Mt. Madonna Inn to Sprig Lake at no charge. Registration fees will be $25 with shirt and $18 without.

Medals will be awarded to the first three places in each age group in both races.

Last chance to rock ‘n’ roll

GILROY – Don’t miss “Rock ‘n’ Roll Reunion,” a singing and dancing tribute to the ’50s and ’60s. The show is a presentation of John Bisceglie and the City of Gilroy Community Services Department. The annual Children’s Summer Theater production will take place through Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Gilroy High School Theater, 750 W. 10th St.

CMAP seeks nominations

GILROY – Community Media Access Partnership, the community TV station for Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista, is currently looking for board members to fill three elected positions.

CMAP’s board of directors is comprised of city and school representatives, as well as interested residents, who make crucial decisions as to how CMAP is run. CMAP’s board meets the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in Hollister, Gilroy and San Juan Bautista.

Interested candidates must be CMAP members in good standing and must submit a nomination by petition form (available at CMAP office and online at www.mycmap.org), obtaining 10 signatures of current CMAP members. This form, as well as a candidate statement (200 words maximum) must be delivered to CMAP by Thursday, Sept. 18, at 5 p.m.

Bonfante Gardens hosts expo

GILROY – Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park will host the Home, Garden and Lifestyle Event Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21. More than 100 vendors will be present in the park displaying products and services for homeowners, gardeners and families that celebrate how we live and play in the South Valley area.

During the Home, Garden and Lifestyle Event, park attendees will be able to enjoy rides, gardens and food as usual and will also be able to meet local businesses and shop for unique products for South Valley homes, gardens, personal entertainment, health and fitness and much more.

SAN MARTIN – The San Martin Animal Shelter is currently caring for nearly 300 cats and kittens. They are desperately trying to save them all, but need people’s assistance to accomplish this. People can help by adopting a new pet, agreeing to care for a barn cat on their land, becoming a cat foster home, volunteering to clean cages at the shelter or making a tax-deductible donation of money or supplies to the shelter. Free movie under the stars

MORGAN HILL – The Chamber of Commerce will host its second annual “Movie Night Under the Stars” at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center on Saturday, Sept. 6, at dusk.

The free event will begin at 4 p.m. with a family funfest featuring dance, martial arts and gymnastics demonstrations. Food, microbrew beers and local wines will be available. Kids’ activities including a three-story slide, jump house and crafts will also be on hand.

The movie, “The Sandlot,” is rated PG and will be projected on an outdoor screen at dusk. The Community and Cultural Center is at Monterey and Dunne Avenue at 17000 Monterey Road in the downtown Morgan Hill.

Elks fund raiser

HOLLISTER – Tickets are still available for a night of dining and dancing to live music from the Big Band-era. “Once Upon a Time,” as the fund-raising affair is called, will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at Hollister Lodge No. 1436, 351 Astro Drive, Hollister. Dinner will be served 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., followed by dancing to the Robin Anderson Big Band with Ruby Rudman, a 17-piece orchestra.
