As a long time resident of Gilroy, I am confused. Since when is Seventh and Eigleberry considered the “heart of Gilroy” or even downtown Gilroy? Is this really the location chosen by the task force for the new arts and culture center? Has anybody on that committee been to Seventh and Eigleberry lately?
With so many more exciting areas to chose from, all over town, why would anyone pick that location for a big, beautiful cultural arts center. I don’t think the area will ever be able to support the parking, dining and shopping we are being led to believe will materialize for downtown if we build it there.
I drove by there the other day. My understanding is that a number of homes will have to be torn down, after the residents, in their generous support of the arts, are convinced that their homes need to go. Where will they go with such a lack of affordable housing in Gilroy or does anyone care about that. I mean, it’s not as if those homes are just sitting empty.
Why not find some land that has less of an impact on current residents and is already in a desirable location. Frankly, I still don’t understand what was wrong with the idea of buying South Valley Community Church at First Street near Santa Teresa. Wasn’t it available for under four million dollars just one year ago?
Is there any land on the corner of Hecker Pass that is available for a cultural arts center? First Street and the Hecker Pass corridor seem to be more the heart of Gilroy than Seventh and Eigleberry will ever be.
