Enjoy a night at the ‘movies’ at pops concert

GILROY – Tickets are now on sale for the South Valley Symphony’s “POPS” concert, scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at 8 p.m. at the Gavilan College theater. This year’s concert will feature the South Valley Youth Orchestra teaming up with the symphony in three selections from the motion picture industry’s most memorable films. Tickets can be purchased at Snappy Photo at 785 First St., California Music Company and Porcella’s Music and Accessories. Prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors age 55 and up and $7 for students age 12 to 18. Children under 12 will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by a paid adult.

Hometown blues artist

GILROY – Gilroy native Shane Dwight and his band bring their fresh take on the blues and rock home on Friday, May 30, at 9 p.m. at the Historic Strand Theater, 7588 Monterey. Then on Saturday, May 31, at 9 p.m. Jorge Santana, who toured with his brother Carlos in the ’80s and ’90s will showcase his unique brand of Latin rock and jazz as he plays with a local favorite Latin jazz band, Suavé. GILROY – Gilroy Community Services Aquatics Registration Fair will be held on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Senior Center. Registration for all lessons will be taken starting Saturday at the Senior Center and will continue at the Gilroy Community Services office starting Monday, June 2. Summer theater is groovy

GILROY – Room is still available for children to participate in STAR 2003. “Groovy” is an amazing musical comedy tribute to the ’60s, which will be directed by Pepe Espinosa. This fun-filled summer program is presented by the Gavilan College Theatre Arts program for young people ages 8 to 15. Come and participate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Partial scholarships are still available for Session 2. County wins award

SAN JOSE – The Santa Clara County Department of Environmental Health has been selected as the recipient of the 2003 Samuel J. Crumbine Consumer Protection Award for Excellence in Food Protection. A jury of leading environmental health officials and public health sanitarians presents the Crumbine Award, named for one of the United States’ most renowned public health sanitarians, to a local public health agency. The Crumbine Award is the most prestigious recognition that a public health agency can receive. Agencies that win the Crumbine serve as models for other public health agencies.

The County Consumer Protection Division, operated by the Departments of Environmental Health, monitors retail food facilities countywide, including restaurants, markets, bakeries, bars, food vehicles, farmers’ markets, street fairs and festivals.

Apply for summer school

GILROY – Gilroy High and Mt. Madonna High summer school program applications are available at the student services office at Gilroy High and at the main office at Mt. Madonna. Summer school registration is conducted on a first come first serve bases; classes are filling quickly. The deadline for registration is Friday, May 30. The program will be held at Gilroy High. Build a float

MORGAN HILL – The highlight of Morgan Hill’s two-day celebration of independence on July 3 and 4 is the official Santa Clara County Independence Day Parade. It is a chance for Home and School clubs, neighbors, scout troops, church, sports and nonprofit groups to show their creativity and gather new followers.

To encourage the community to take part in the parade instead of just lining the streets waving and cheering, parade officials have scheduled a float-building workshop on Saturday, June 7, 9 a.m.to noon at the Grange, 40 E. Fourth St., to explain the rules and help teams with planning.

Applications for parade units – planned now or not – are already being accepted and the deadline of June 4 is fast approaching.

“Let Freedom Ring” is the theme given to this year’s extravaganza.

‘Fact and fantasy’ concert

MORGAN HILL – The public is invited to the Morgan Hill Wind Symphony “Fact and Fantasy” concert on Sunday, June 1, at 7 p.m. Performers will feature a selection of modern and classical music, pieces honoring deeds and events of the past such as the Great Locomotive Chase and Where Valour Proudly Sleeps and those with a fantasy theme such as the theme from “Lord of the Rings” and “An American In Paris.” There will also be a not-to-be missed virtuoso performance by noted Bay Area trombonist Vernon Miyata.
