GILROY – The Gilroy High School Choirs will conclude another year of great music-making on Thursday, June 5. The choirs will be performing in their annual Pops Concert. This year’s theme is music from the 1960s with an emphasis on music from Motown. The choirs will be singing the music of Mary Wells, The Dixiecups, The Angels, Dionne Warwick, Dianna Ross and the Supremes, the 5th Dimension, Neil Sedaka, the Beatles and The Angels to name a few. This year’s concert will also feature the local “oldies” band The Corvairs as the backup band.

The concert will be at the Gavilan College Theater. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. Doors will open for seating at 7:10 p.m.

It is the final concert of the year for the five choirs at Gilroy High, which involve more than 160 students, under the direction of Phil Robb.

Pregnancy prevention rocks

GILROY – The teen forum entitled “Rock the Future” will be Saturday, May 31, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Wheeler Auditorium. Rock the Future is an “edutainment” event that uses the elements of hip-hop in order to attract local youth to an afternoon of empowerment and education surrounding sexual and reproductive health, as well as the prevention of other destructive behavior such as violence, drug and alcohol abuse.

This free event will include a two-on-two “b-boy” (breakdance) battle, live deejays, a muralist painting a theme-based mural and a health resource fair with a variety of youth-focused agencies and organizations providing outreach.

The event is open to all members of the community and is presented by the Santa Clara Valley Public Health Department’s Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Network, Family Awareness, Responsibility and Education (FARE) work group. Details:

‘Fill the Boot’ drive

GILROY – Gilroy Fire Fighters Local 2805 will be having a Muscular Dystrophy Association “Fill the Boot” drive on Saturday and Sunday, May 31 and June 1, at Nob Hill Foods, 777 First St.

The members of the Gilroy Fire Fighters Association will be in front of the store from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. asking people to drop donations into their boots. The money will help thousands of families in Northern California affected by neuromuscular disease. Both mornings Fire Captain Clay Bentson will have his championship gas dragster on display. Also from 1 to 3 p.m. the Gilroy Fire Department will have an engine on display and Sparky the Fire Dog will be there. Details: Mark Ordaz at

Veterans walk-a-thon

GILROY – The Veterans Employment Committee will hold its fourth annual Walk-A-Thon on Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Las Animas Veterans Park, 400 Mantelli Drive. Registrations begins at 7:30 a.m. and walks will commence every 30 minutes with the last one starting at 12:30 p.m.

The event is to recognize veterans and donations will fund the Bill Estes Memorial Veterans Scholarship Fund, Ron Corbal Youth Scholarship and employment, retention and advancement services for veterans. There will also be prizes to those participants who bring in the most pledges.

Apply for summer school

GILROY – Gilroy High and Mt. Madonna High summer school program applications are available at the student services office at Gilroy High and at the main office at Mt. Madonna. Summer school registration is conducted on a first-come, first-serve bases; classes are filling quickly. The deadline for registration is Friday, May 30. The program will be held at Gilroy High. Summer swimmin’

GILROY – Gilroy Community Services Aquatics Registration Fair will be held on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Senior Center. Registration for all lessons will be taken starting Saturday at the Senior Center and will continue at the Gilroy Community Services office starting Monday, June 2. Season finale concert

GILROY – The South Valley Youth Orchestra will perform its “Season Finale” concert at 7 p.m. Monday, June 2, in the Gilroy High School Theater. Under the direction of conductor Vincent Gomez, the SVYO wraps up its first full season with a free presentation for the community.
