GHS girls gymnastics wins opener with 131.3; Gonzalez takes
all-around
GILROY – Junior Luz Gonzalez’s first-place all-around performance led the way for the Gilroy High girls gymnastics squad in Tuesday’s home opener – producing a dominant 131.3 team score over both visiting Monte Vista (76.6) and Cupertino (51.6).

“It was a great performance for the girls. They really impressed me,” head coach Nicole Anagnoston said. “They did great on their beam routines and floor routines.”

Gonzalez placed first on both with a 9.2 on the balance beam and a 9.5 on her floor exercise. The budding star – who tied for first in the all-around with a 35.7 – also was second on vault with an 8.65 and third on the uneven bars with an 8.35.

Gilroy was also back by superb showings from senior Nicole Hee (who was fourth on floor with an 8.95 and fifth on bars with an 8.0); junior Valeri Avila (who was second on beam with an 8.6, fourth on vault with an 8.35, and second on floor with a 9.4); and junior Dayrel Wilson (who was fifth on beam with a 7.45 and sixth on bars with a 7.9).

“For their first home meet with the home crowd, the girls definitely rose to the ocassion,” said Anagnoston, whose squad will host its second home meet on May 5 at 4 p.m.
