Dear Editor:
I can’t agree more with the letter by Terry Wolfe in Tuesday’s “Your Voice” and I share the frustration. I have seen the GUSD decline over the years and it seems that any suggestions or complaints fall on deaf ears.
Residing in the Gilroy area since 1971, we have had four of our five children go through the Gilroy school system. They say that some of their best memories are with the raising of their project animals and competition at the fair. It reinforced their sense of responsibility and contributed to them becoming well rounded, compassionate adult. They are all grown now and have their own children.
One of our daughters, now in Iraq with the army, had to leave her two children with us while she was deployed to Afghanistan last year. Both children are of school age and we enrolled them in school here in Gilroy. This year we sent the children to their other grandparents, out of state, rather than to through the experience that we had last year with GUSD.
Unfortunately the process of getting the children in school was nothing short of a nightmare, spending several hours in the district office and taking over two weeks. Our five-year-old grandchild was lost in the school bus system twice. These events, combined with other concerns we had, were conveyed to the district. Our attempts to communicate, both by phone and letter, with the district were completely ignored.
This is how they show their concern about the students being their top priority. We had no problem wit the teachers, they were as concerned as we were. The district office is where the problem occurred.
I think it’s time for the Board to put their political and personal agendas aside and start thinking about what is really best for the students. It’s important that programs like the agriculture program are available for the students and dedicated teachers such as Mr. Duarte are key part of the kids becoming successful.
