Police this week responded to a report of a pit bull attacking another dog and its owner in the 100 block of Recht Street.

The victim was walking his dog Saturday on a leash along Recht Street when a loose pit bull confronted him and attacked the his dog, inflicting a mortal wound, police said. The pit bull also bit the man as he attempted to fend off the animal, police said.

The man was treated at the hospital and later released, police said. His dog’s injuries were severe, however, and a veterinarian attempted life-saving efforts before determining it could not recover and euthanized the pet.

An animal control officer contacted the pit bull’s owner and seized the dog for quarantine, police said. All dogs in Hollister must be licensed with proof of current vaccinations, police said. In addition, dogs with the propensity to be vicious must be kept in a pen.
